Tetris House - IQ Glass International

Oversized Minimal Sliding Glass Doors in Luxury Sao Paulo Home

Located in the leafy outskirts of São Paulo, this eccentric new build home breaks the boundaries of open plan living. The project takes the form of a huge box-shaped design, containing the entirety of the ground floor as one sprawling living space with a large mezzanine area overlooking it.

Sustainably sourced timber beams clad the high, dramatic ceiling with rich brown hues, while paler wooden slats create a smooth, bright floor that extends the length of the central room with its seating spaces dotted throughout. To each end of the huge tube-like design, minimal sliding glass doors and specialist thermally broken structural glazing create extensive glazed elevations that allow natural light to flood the space.

Minimally framed glass door systems from IQ were specified for this ambitious international project. Their ultra-slim sightline ensures that large elevations of sliding glass can be created without impeding the flow of natural light, a key aspect in both the minimalistic interior design of the Brazilian home, as well as the lifestyle and habits of the homeowners.

With an impressive Tetris-like design of wooden bookcases lining the double-height wall of the main room, the extensive natural light that passes through the glass at each end allows the occupants to enjoy the expansive collection of literature from the comfort of the sofas and study spaces that furnish the main living space.

On top of their minimal aesthetic, the IQ sliding doors boast high-performance values that help create a comfortable living environment for the home’s occupants. The double-glazed units with their thermally broken frames allow for high levels of thermal insulation, an essential element given the open internal layout of the house. Similarly, the slim sliding door system boasts an acoustic insulation rating of 41dB, more than sufficient for a peaceful sanctuary away from the nearby busy city of São Paulo.

The hidden base track of the sliding door in Brazil has been designed to lie flush with the floor, allowing for seamless access to the garden spaces on either side of the house. To one side, the tall, glazed elevation leads onto an outdoor pool and seating area, the timber roof extending out over the doors to create a protective shelter over the marble patio. This allows the homeowners to enjoy an indoor-outdoor lifestyle even during wetter weather, while also ensuring that rain cannot drip down the glazed facades and enter the home.
