A Bespoke Glazing Package Adorns Guernsey Bungalow
The renovation of a quaint Guernsey bungalow merges heritage charm with the modern sophistication of a contemporary glazing package all while preserving its historical character.
An Apertio solid entrance pivoting door with sidelights greets the homeowners with its timber finish, establishing a thematic connection with the other outdoor timber elements adorning the bungalow’s exterior.
Once inside, an oversized structural glass frameless picture window stretches in height across two floors, flooding the staircase and the interiors with natural light.
Structural glazing solutions offer numerous benefits, primarily in their ability to accommodate massive sizes and their enhancement of thermal efficiency. By opting for IQ’s own Invisio structural glazing frameless window solution, Tyrrell Dowinton Associates were able to provide a highly thermally efficient window while preserving their striking design aesthetic.
Another frameless effect feature is found in the fixed rooflights, which comprise of two silicone jointed panes with a steel section in between the panels for support. This glass roof solution allows even more natural light into the open plan living room and kitchen, creating a sense of openness and serenity.
Along the entire room, a series of minimally framed sliding glass doors connect the interior living spaces to the outdoors in a corner-to-corner configuration, maximising garden views through their ultra slim 21mm sightlines and maximising comfort with their incredibly efficient thermal performance.
On the upper floor, sliding windows are complemented by a structural glass balustrade, creating a charming Juliette balcony.
To withstand the coastal environment’s harsh conditions, including ocean salts and sea debris, all glazing has been treated with a marine grade coating, guaranteeing durability and prolonged protection.
Furthermore, to optimize the building’s thermal efficiency, solar control coatings have been applied to all glazing components, ensuring comfortable temperatures year-round and reducing energy consumptions.
