Glass Extension to a Luxury Hotel in Belgium

This hotel in Belgium underwent a vast renovation and extension project to expand the useable space in the hotel restaurant and create an indoor-outdoor dining experience. The new extension uses slim framed sliding door solutions to create floor to ceiling glass walls that can be opened up during the warmer months, offering the hotel guests al fresco dining when the weather permits.

The glass extension in Belgium was designed with natural light in mind, enhancing the flow of light throughout the main hotel building as well as extending the seating area. It was important for the glazing to be as minimal as possible without compromising on performance and for this reason the minimal windows® sliding door system was specified. The PAS24 certified sliding door system has ultra-slim sightlines of just 21mm, with the ability to accommodate complex configurations such as an opening corner.

Attention to detail was shown throughout the renovation, including the base detail of the moving glass walls which was designed to be completely flush. This step free access allows guests and diners to travel between indoor and outdoor environments, merging the two environments to allow the terraced outdoor area to be enjoyed.  Corner opening configurations create a flexible design for the glass extension in Belgium, with the ability to slide the oversized panes away from the corner junction for a floating roof effect.

The aluminium profiles were powder coated in black to match the black roof pressings, creating a contrast against the original building which uses a pale and neutral colour palette. The transparent nature of glass combined with the dark profiles creates a clear differentiation between the old and new parts of the building, modernising the overall hotel design and architecture.

Steel supporting posts have been included in the design, running the length of the extension. The posts have been finished in the same black as the aluminium profiles, creating a coherent design whilst offering the structural support needed to support the new ceiling. The glass extension in Belgium has allowed the hotel to open up its space come rain or shine to allow more guests to enjoy the beautiful setting. During the winter months, the thermally broken sliding glass doors create the perfect environment to enjoy the winter sun from inside the highly glazed space.
