Contemporary New Build Villa With Bespoke Glazing in Barbados
This villa was designed as a second home and the brief was to create an escape from busy London life that acted as a calming retreat for the homeowners. IQ designed a bespoke glazing package and worked with Elements Architecture to create a highly glazed design that was both functional and stunning.
The entrance design as you approach the contemporary villa follows a highly glazed design, with a wraparound terrace on the first floor that provides privacy to the upstairs living space, which is set back from the street view and out of sight. The entrance door is an Apertio solid door, chosen for its integral strength and high security performance. The premium entrance door is complete with a stainless steel pull handle and porcelain external finish, adding warmth to the otherwise white colour palette. On the internal face of the door, a timber finish was chosen to create a dual finish effect that was suited to both the interior and exterior design.
Architectural glazing was used to create fixed sidelights around the entrance door, providing the homeowners with clear views when they have visitors and enhancing the internal space by flooding it with natural light throughout the day. Frameless architectural glazing in Barbados can also be seen on the first floor in the form of a minimal glass to glass corner, which uses structural silicone for a completely frameless finish.
Slim framed sliding doors were specified as part of the bespoke glazing in Barbados to create entire walls of moving glass, with the luxury glazing offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastal environment. The architectural glazing solutions were all manufactured to a marine grade standard, with marine grade finishes to ensure suitability for the setting. The sliding glass doors were installed across both floors of the luxury villa, creating a fully glazed façade that opens up to merge indoor and outdoor areas.
On the upper floor, the slim framed sliding doors in Barbados lead to private balcony areas, complete with frameless glass balustrades to act as a safety barrier without disrupting the views or minimal architecture. Various configurations were utilised to create functional living spaces in different locations of the contemporary villa, including biparting sliding doors and two pane configurations with one fixed and one sliding pane. Every sliding glass door is complete with a flush threshold for step free travel, creating an indoor-outdoor style of living.
Aluminium framed casement windows were specified for a coherent finish across the villa, with thermally broken properties to maintain a comfortable living temperature in the hot climate. Specifying thermally broken glazing is essential for locations such as Barbados, helping to save on cooling costs by creating a clear separation between the two temperature environments.
Outside the contemporary villa, in keeping with the bespoke glazing in Barbados, an IQ Lux Louvre roof system was designed to create a shaded outdoor area with flexibility to suit the homeowner’s needs. The louvre roof system is fully automated and the louvres rotate up to 140 degrees to provide a flexible shading solution that also acts as a weathertight shelter in the event of rain.
This was the perfect addition to the glazing package and the homeowners can now enjoy time outside with the added practicality of solar shading, which can be adjusted throughout the day to suit their needs at the click of a button.
