Glass pivot doors create oversized architectural openings using slim aluminum framing and a balanced offset pivot mechanism. The glazed leaf rotates away from its edge, allowing taller and wider panels to open smoothly with minimal visible hardware.

Suitable for luxury homes, villas and commercial spaces, the system can be used for entrances, terraces, patios and double-height openings. Each door is engineered around the panel size, environmental exposure, supporting structure and performance requirements of the project.

Design and Operation of Glass Pivot Doors

Unlike a conventional hinged door, a glass pivot door rotates around a pivot point positioned within the width of the leaf. This distributes the weight of the panel across the mechanism and creates a controlled, balanced opening movement.

The door can be configured to open inward or outward, with the pivot position selected around circulation, panel proportions and the required clear opening.

Slim vertical aluminum profiles provide structural support without introducing bulky hinges across the elevation. The framing profile can also act as the pull handle, helping to preserve the minimal appearance of the glass.

Oversized Openings and Facade Integration

The pivot mechanism makes glass pivot doors particularly suited to oversized and double-height openings. Large glazed leaves can become a strong architectural feature while maintaining clear views through the surrounding elevation.

The system can be installed as a standalone door or incorporated into a wider arrangement of fixed glazing, glass walls or minimal sliding doors. Coordinating the framing and sightlines across these systems creates a consistent glazed facade rather than treating the door as an isolated element.

Larger panels are developed through project-specific engineering, taking account of glass weight, wind pressure, pivot position and the supporting floor and head structure.

Flush Threshold and Weather Protection

A magnetic rising seal allows the glass pivot door to maintain a flush threshold when open.

As the door moves into the closed position, the magnetic weather bar rises from the base frame and engages with the underside of the glazed leaf. This forms a weather seal without leaving a permanently raised barrier across the opening.

An integrated water channel manages rainwater at the base of the system. Together, these details provide protection against driving rain while allowing internal and external floor finishes to meet cleanly across the threshold.

Performance for U.S. and Caribbean Projects

Glass pivot doors for exterior applications use fully thermally broken aluminum framing and insulated glass units with low-E coatings and argon gas filling.

Tested system performance includes Class 4 air permeability, Class 6A water tightness and Class C2/B3 resistance to wind loads under the relevant European standards. Testing was completed on a door measuring approximately 5 ft 11 in wide by 9 ft 10 in tall.

For U.S. and Caribbean projects, the final assembly is engineered around local wind exposure, solar conditions, drainage requirements and applicable building codes. Marine-grade finishes and solar-control glass can be specified for coastal and high-exposure locations.

Automation, Locking and Access Control

Glass pivot doors can incorporate manual or electronic locking without compromising their minimal design.

Manual doors can use locking concealed within the vertical frame, with an integrated key cylinder and internal lever. Electronic systems can remove the need for a conventional external cylinder and can be coordinated with fingerprint readers, Bluetooth controls or wider building-access systems.

The minimal windows® 4+ pivot door can also be specified with a concealed automated drive positioned above the upper pivot point. The mechanism remains hidden within the ceiling or lintel, allowing large glazed leaves to operate automatically without visible surface-mounted equipment.
